Vaccinations

Sara's otherwise-sensible doctors want to start her on multiple routine vaccinations. While she's in the NICU. While she weighs 3 lbs. Just because she's two months old. I asked myself what the chances were that she'd contract polio, for example, within the next two months, then said, "thanks, but no." Sheesh.

  1. Doctors hate me for questioning vaccines.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about vaccines... but when the doctor himself refers to the live-culture version of one of the vaccines as the "dirty vaccine", I insisted on waiting until the safer alternative was available.

  2. Every time this issue raises its head I remember my dear cellist friend from grad school who - at age 37 -- contracted polio from changing the very wet diaper of a newly vaccinated babe. My point is that you never know when you are going to be exposed to a virus. A very nettlesome problem!

  3. Ugh. I suppose I'll talk to the doctors about her risk of infection in the NICU by medical personnel. But I still think shooting her up now is a bad idea.
